Starr Regional Medical Center Launches 24/7 Tele-ICU Services

Tele-ICU expands access to critical care, strengthening regional healthcare delivery

Aug. 5, 2025 – Starr Regional Medical Center (SRMC) today announced it is implementing a 24/7 tele-intensive care unit (tele-ICU) service at its Athens and Etowah campuses.

This service connects SRMC’s on-site ICU and Emergency Department teams with board-certified critical care physicians (intensivists) through a secure telehealth platform. This platform is operated by Equum Medical, a leader in virtual critical care services, in collaboration with Caregility, a global provider of connected care and AI-driven solutions. The tele-ICU initiative provides critically ill patients with expert, around-the-clock care without needing to leave McMinn County.

“We are bringing critical care expertise directly to our patients’ bedsides, day or night,” said John McLain, Chief Executive Officer of Starr Regional Medical Center. “By investing in tele-intensivist services and leading technology, we’re able to treat higher-acuity patients right here at Starr Regional Medical Center. This aligns with our mission to make communities healthier by delivering specialized care close to home.”

The tele-ICU program provides 24/7 access to a team of board-certified intensivists who support SRMC’s five-bed ICU. Using in-room devices, these specialists evaluate patients, guide treatment plans, and respond to emergencies such as code blue or rapid response events. They also conduct twice-daily virtual rounds with on-site clinicians to ensure timely, evidence-based interventions.

The service will expand to include five additional ICU beds following the completion of SRMC’s $12 million expansion and renovation project. This investment will increase ICU capacity to 10 beds, upgrade medical technology, and modernize existing spaces at the Athens campus.

Intensivists access the hospital’s electronic health records to review patient data and enter orders, just as an on-site physician would. Mobile telehealth carts equipped with high-definition cameras, microphones, speakers, and monitors enable seamless two-way communication between remote specialists and bedside teams.

“Starr Regional is taking a forward-looking approach to critical care,” said Dr. Corey Scurlock, Founder and CEO of Equum Medical. “By combining our clinical expertise with Caregility’s telehealth technology, we’re ensuring that patients at SRMC receive the same high-quality ICU care available at larger facilities.”

“Caregility is proud to work with SRMC and Equum to expand access to critical care through our Connected Care platform,” added Mike Brandofino, President and COO of Caregility. “Our technology enables always-on virtual access to specialized care, empowering rural and community hospitals to deliver ICU-level services efficiently and effectively—so patients can receive the care they need without leaving their community.”

Telehealth services like tele-ICU are especially valuable for rural hospitals, helping reduce patient transfers, improve care efficiency, and optimize resources. For more information about telehealth services at Starr Regional Medical Center, visit StarrRegional.com/telehealth.

Caregility Releases First Edge-Based Computer Vision AI Capability for Healthcare

Caregility eliminates reliance on expensive cloud processing for computer vision application

Wall, NJ (August 13, 2024) – Caregility Corporation, an enterprise telehealth leader dedicated to connecting care for patients and clinicians everywhere, is excited to announce the release of new fall risk detection capability in its iObserver solution. Hospital care teams use iObserver for continuous observation of patients at risk of self-harm or falls. The new artificial intelligence (AI) capability, developed natively by Caregility, uses computer vision to analyze visual information, detect fall risks, and alert caregivers accordingly.

The Caregility platform allows AI technology to run entirely on telehealth edge devices in the patient room, eliminating the need to stream patient audio-visual data to the cloud. This approach ensures cost-effective, scalable solutions across thousands of rooms where Caregility endpoints are available today. Other comparable technologies face challenges related to bandwidth for video streams and the processing power needed to scale across numerous rooms. Most importantly, this purposeful application of computer vision technology underscores Caregility’s commitment to responsible AI, as visual data is processed locally, safeguarding data protection and privacy.

“Our open and adaptable platform allows us to develop native AI capabilities when possible while also evaluating other third-party solutions to determine if they can add value to caregivers’ workflows,” said Kedar Ganta, Caregility’s Chief Product and Engineering Officer. “This flexibility keeps us at the forefront of AI advancements without being locked into a single solution.”

“We’re redefining the future of telehealth with AI-powered edge computing,” said Bin Guan, Caregility’s Chief Innovation Officer. “By breaking down traditional barriers to AI adoption, we’re enabling healthcare providers to leverage cutting-edge technology without sacrificing operational efficiency or data privacy.”

“This breakthrough in AI at the edge is confirmation of Caregility’s ability to innovate,” added Mike Brandofino, Caregility’s President and Chief Operating Officer. “At the same time, no company can provide all the technology required to deliver on the modernization of care. Caregility remains committed to integrating with other AI technology partners where it makes sense in order to bring value and flexibility to our customers. This ultimately provides them with a foundational platform they can build on for the foreseeable future.”

Caregility’s computer vision capability is available to be used on every one of the more than 15,000 Caregility edge devices currently installed in hospitals around the globe. This is a testament to the value and durability of Caregility’s purpose-built devices, called Access Point of Care Systems (APS). The first APS system ever deployed by the company is still running after six and half years in continuous operation, proving that choosing Caregility means that health systems will have a future-proof solution that can adapt as new technology is introduced.

“Our approach to AI involves understanding the challenges our customers face and then identifying where technology can play a role,” said Ganta. “We believe that combining our video AI and audio AI with specialized third-party solutions, such as contactless vitals tracking, can provide caregivers with valuable insights to improve patient outcomes. By leveraging our edge devices and avoiding the challenges of cloud-based AI, we can achieve faster and more accurate results with our proprietary technology.”

Baptist Health, Caregility Expand Partnership to Enhance Patient Care

EATONTOWN, N.J. and LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (May 9, 2024) – Baptist Health and Caregility are pleased to announce an expanded partnership aimed at enhancing patient care across the Arkansas-based healthcare organization.

Baptist Health will enhance its bedside care teams by increasing its usage of Caregility intelligent telehealth devices to more than 700 bedsides system-wide, doubling the footprint of the healthcare organization’s inpatient telehealth services. The initiative adds virtual clinical resources to support in-person bedside care and help improve patient outcomes. This collaboration underscores both organizations’ commitment to leveraging technology to transform healthcare delivery and meet the evolving needs of patients and staff.

The enhanced partnership builds upon Baptist Health’s previous success with virtual admissions and discharge programs, currently supported by more than 300 wall-mounted and cart-based Caregility telehealth devices across 11 hospitals. Since partnering on virtual care services with Caregility in 2021, telehealth session volume for Baptist Health has increased from roughly 1,000 virtual visits per quarter to more than 20,000.

In early 2023, Baptist Health Rehabilitation Institute successfully launched Arkansas’ first virtual nursing program to provide additional support to bedside nurses, patients and families. The program then expanded to the healing ministry’s hospitals in Stuttgart, Malvern and Heber Springs. Thanks to positive patient outcomes and feedback, Baptist Health will roll out virtual care programs on every medical and surgical floor across the organization.

As part of this expansion, Baptist Health will deploy Caregility’s new, highly advanced telehealth devices and award-winning Caregility Cloud™ virtual care platform in more than 500 additional patient rooms at the health system’s flagship hospital, Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock, as well as Baptist Health Medical Center-North Little Rock and Baptist Health-Fort Smith. These devices will support the expansion of virtual nursing and the rollout of virtual support staff and virtual providers in the coming months. Additionally, a centralized hub to support virtual nursing and virtual sitters has opened on the Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock campus.

“Embracing virtual support as part of our acute care bedside support and quality strategy signifies a pivotal step forward in how we envision the future of healthcare at Baptist Health. Baptist Health first added virtual care in 2005, and we have continued to advance with the latest technology bringing us to where we are today with our partnership with Caregility. This expansion is more than an initiative; it’s a commitment to providing health equity across our state, setting new standards in patient and provider satisfaction, and furthering our mission to be the employer of choice in Arkansas.”

and system post-acute services

The partnership exponentially increases the eyes and ears able to focus on patients, reducing pressure on bedside staff by redistributing tasks that a virtual nurse or support staff can field. As a result of increased telehealth services in acute care settings, healthcare systems see significant time savings and improved throughput (the process of moving patients through the hospital system from admission to discharge). Having virtual options at the bedside appeals to patients as well, as evidenced by improved patient satisfaction ratings in early field trials.

“We are at a point where this type of care model is not an option for our health systems, it is the only way they can address staffing issues and remain competitive,” said Caregility President and COO Mike Brandofino. “This partnership with Baptist Health is a great example of how Caregility can make it easy to deploy intelligent devices and services to enhance patient care through virtual programs.”

Caregility Cloud™ allows health systems to easily centralize and scale programs such as Virtual Nursing, Virtual Patient Observation, Virtual Rounding, and Virtual Consultations in inpatient settings, improving staffing flexibility and workflow efficiency and making it easier to engage remote specialists and interpreters to support patient access and health equity. Trusted by more than 1,000 U.S. hospitals for high reliability, the platform is favored for its adaptability to a multitude of workflows and integrations with clinical platforms, including Epic.
